Best Rum for a Mai Tai
Best Rum for a Mai Tai
The best Mai Tai uses two rums — an aged rum for depth and a rich dark rum for the finish — and neither should contain added sugar. Our picks are Falconet Midnight for the base and Revenge or Drake to carry the top.
Why the Mai Tai is a two-rum drink
Trader Vic built the original in 1944 around a 17-year Jamaican rum that no longer exists. Every good Mai Tai since has been an attempt to rebuild that character from more than one bottle: something aged and oaky for the body, something funky and molasses-rich for the length.
The drink also carries orgeat and curacao, both sweet. That is the argument against a sweetened rum here — the sugar budget is already spent before the rum arrives, and a Mai Tai that tips sweet loses the almond and lime that make it interesting.
Our picks
Falconet Midnight — aged 8 to 15 years, dry and layered. A strong base rum.
Revenge — dark Jamaican spiced, with enough backbone to sit on top without disappearing behind the juice.
Drake — a five-origin dark blend including Jamaican rum, and a good single-bottle answer if you only want to open one.
The recipe
Our Man-O-War Mai Tai is adapted from Trader Vic's 1944 original, leaving out the now-unobtainable Wray and Nephew and raising the curacao in place of rock candy syrup. Full measurements and method on the recipe page.
What to look for in any rum
For the base, look for an aged rum with a stated age and no added sugar. For the float, look for Jamaican or Jamaican-style rum — the ester-heavy, slightly funky character is what people recognise as "tasting like a Mai Tai". Avoid anything labelled as a Mai Tai mix.
Frequently asked questions
What rum did the original Mai Tai use?
Trader Vic's 1944 original used a 17-year J. Wray and Nephew Jamaican rum, which has not been produced for decades. Modern recipes rebuild that profile by blending an aged rum with a richer Jamaican-style rum.
Can you make a Mai Tai with one rum?
Yes. A single dark blend with Jamaican rum in it will make a good Mai Tai. Two rums give more complexity, but one good bottle beats two mediocre ones.
What is orgeat and can I skip it?
Orgeat is an almond syrup, and it is the ingredient that makes a Mai Tai taste like a Mai Tai. Skipping it leaves you with a rum sour. It is worth buying or making.
